Initial ‘Vertigo’ Plans

Potential Audiences –

The potential audiences for ‘Vertigo’ would be students who are studying Film Studies and older people. Students studying Film Studies would be a potential target audience due to them studying a course about film. The students would need to learn how to analyse films, so by watching ‘Vertigo’, which is a complex film to understand, would help them in analysing other more complex films in the future. People who are older would be a target audience for the film as they would want to watch the film for the nostalgic feeling due to them being around in a time where the film would have been recently released. However, due to the venue that the film will be shown at is in town and it will be quite late when the film is being shown, so older people might not be out in town at that time as opposed to younger people.

Marketing –

Since the film ‘Vertigo’ has been judged by film critics as “the best film ever made”, using that statement in marketing would help to get more people to watch the film since they will think that they are going to watch the best film that has ever been made.

Posters are a simple yet effective method of advertising and can be made to raise awareness of the film’s screening.

Enhancing the interaction (before the screening when people have arrived and are waiting for the film to start)

  1. A treasure hunt with things from the film as clues for the audience members to take part in when they are waiting for the film screening to start.
  2. A chance for the audience members to look around the museum and at the art before the film screening starts.

Audience Responses –

To collect the responses for future analysis, interviewing the members of the audience who watched the film can be filmed and the footage of the interview’s we carry out can be referred to later on. For people who are camera shy or if the line for the interviews gets too long, then we can also use questionnaires that the members of the audience can fill out; both of these methods can be useful ways of gathering primary information.

Challenges –

Since ‘Vertigo’ is an old film, (57 years since release) then it would be harder to advertise for it in a more modern way.

The ticket price will be £8, so this could create challenges when convincing potential audience members to buy a ticket to watch the film, as if they are university students and had a choice of buying a ticket for a film at £8 or doing something else that they’d prefer to do more, then it would be harder to convince them to choose buying a ticket to the film screening than their other options.

Proposal –

Film: ‘Vertigo’

Location: The Harris Museum & Art Gallery

Why would this location be useful?

The Harris Museum & Art Gallery is an ideal place for the screening of the film ‘Vertigo’ because there is a scene in the film at an art gallery where “Madeleine” is seen sitting staring at the picture of Carlotta while Johnny (Scottie) watches her in secret. Being in a location surrounded by art would allow the audience to feel as though they’re in the room with the characters.

Health & Safety issues:

When watching the film, members of the audience will want something to eat or drink. The floor in the Art Gallery are shiny and if it is either wet or something was spilt on it, such as a drink, which would then cause people to potentially slip on it due to them not being like carpet, which has more grip.

If the film is being shown at night time, since it will be the start of December when the screening of the film is scheduled for, it will be getting darker earlier, so with it being dark, it will be harder for people to see where they’re going, which could end up making them trip over things they would have normally seen during the day, or if it was light, or they could walk into things.

There are also a lot of stairs to go up before getting to The Harris Museum, so if there are older people, they might get tired when going up the stairs, and if it has been raining, theses steps could make people slip on them and potentially fall down the stairs injuring themselves.

Health & Safety issues’ solutions:

If people have got drinks and they spill some of it or drop it, we can make sure that there are wet floor signs around to make people aware that in that specific area, it is wet.

To solve the issue of it being dark earlier, making sure that there is some sort of lighting around to make sure people can see where they’re going when walking up to The Harris Museum will be useful since it would prevent people falling over if they can’t see where they are going.

To solve the issue of the steps, people could offer to help people who are on their own, especially older people, up the stairs to prevent falling (or slipping if the steps are wet) so they don’t injure themselves.

‘Vertigo’ poster design:

This is the design I have made for the poster for the screening of ‘Vertigo’ at The Harris Museum on Friday, 4th December 2015.

I have included useful information for potential audiences that they will need to know, such as the ticket price, where and when the screening is going to be, and most importantly, what the film being screened is called.
